Yield Before Making a Left Turn
When you need to make a left turn within an intersection or into a driveway, alley or private road you must yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction that is close enough to be a hazard. Being sure to yield before making a left turn will help you to avoid a car accident.
The Rule of the Road requiring this responsibility is as follows:
RCW 46.61.185: Vehicle turning left.
The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard.
Failure to yield the right of way is a common cause of car accidents. The 2015 Annual Collision Summary produced by the Washington Department of Transportation indicated that failure to yield right of way to a motor vehicle was a contributing circumstance in over 18,000 car accidents in 2015. Additionally, over 4,000 car accidents were due in part to an improper turn/U-turn.
