Am I Permitted to Drive on The Sidewalk in Washington?
As a driver in Washington, am I permitted to drive on the sidewalk? Typically, no; however, there are a few exceptions to this rule.
Under the Washington Rules of the Road you are not permitted to drive on the sidewalk except upon the sidewalk of a permanent or authorized temporary driveway and to cross the sidewalk to a parking lot, alley, or driveway.
If you are utilizing the sidewalk to cross to a driveway, parking lot, or alley way then you are required to yield to all pedestrians. You should look both ways before entering the sidewalk to ensure safe passage for you and for others. Additionally, before you re-enter the roadway you should stop and look for other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
It is important as a driver in Washington to be aware of your surroundings to help protect you, your loved ones, and others from being injured in an accident. Additionally, you should also read and obey the rules of the road of Washington to know what your duties are operating a vehicle, as pedestrian, cyclist, etc. You can find all of the Rules of the Road for Washington state here: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=46.61.
The Washington law prohibiting driving on sidewalks except under limited circumstances is as follows:
RCW 46.61.606: Driving on sidewalk prohibited—Exception.
No person shall drive any vehicle upon a sidewalk or sidewalk area except upon a permanent or duly authorized temporary driveway.
