Washington State Police reported one injured in semi vs. semi truck accident near Pasco. The semi truck accident occurred when a semi truck slowed to make a turn. Unfortunately, the semi following behind was distracted and collided with the trailer of the semi in front. State officials are charging the distracted driver with second-degree negligent driving. The distracted driver was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. Injuries were reportedly not life-threatening. Traffic was slowed for approximately 90 minutes while the right lane was closed to clear debris.
Distracted Driving for Semi Truck Drivers
Most believe distracted driving is texting or using a cell phone while driving. That is only part of it. Actually, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving is “any activity that could divert a person’s attention away from the primary task of driving.”
Semi truck drivers are behind the wheel for hours at a time. Cell phones or text messages are relied on heavily by truckers for job efficiency. For example, cell phones tell truckers weather conditions, road emergency situations, as well as communication with dispatchers and delivery points. Sending or receiving a text message takes a person’s eyes off the road for an estimated five seconds. In that five seconds at highway speed a small car travels about 300 feet. Five seconds is enough for a vehicle to lose control. Fully loaded semi trucks will loose control even faster.
