We have been told time and time again that motorcycles are dangerous. Yet many riders still choose to ride. So how likely is a motorcycle rider to get into an accident? According to crash statics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013, motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities. 4,668 motorcyclists were killed in 2013. This is a six percent decrease from the 4,986 persons killed in a motorcycle accident in 2012.
Of all registered vehicles in the United State in 2013, motorcycles made up 3 percent and accounted for only 0.7 percent of all vehicle miles traveled. Per registered vehicle, the fatality rate for a motorcyclist was 6 times the fatality rate for a passenger vehicle occupant in 2013. Motorcyclists injured (1,052) was slightly higher than the injury rate for passenger vehicle occupants (1,005).
Kennewick Motorcyclist Injured in a Crash
Washington police reported a Kennewick motorcyclist injured after a motorcycle accident occurred on Bob Olson Parkway. Authorities say a number of factors contributed to the cause of the motorcycle crash. Factors such as the rider being unfamiliar with the bike, and was speeding to try to keep up with a fellow rider. The motorcyclist reportedly hit a curb while turning a corner and hit the median. An ambulance rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was stabilized and treated for his injuries. He was then transferred to another medical center for serious facial injuries, police said.
