Top 5 Reasons for Drivers Not Paying Attention
So many people attempt to multi-task while driving that motorists have never been at a higher risk of ending up in a car accident. People on their cell phone, doing makeup, shaving, reading, eating or a number of other things. This is only creating a hazardous environment for the driver and all other drivers on the road with them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2016 alone, 3,450 were killed in a car accident involving a distracted driver. Here are some of the most common reasons for drivers to not pay attention while behind the wheel.
1. Cell Phones
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported about 481,000 drivers using a cell phone while driving during daylight hours. The highest users of cell phones while driving are young adults between the age of 16 and 24 years old. One out of every four car accidents in the United States is caused by texting and driving. Texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.
2. Children or Other People in the Car
Another common reason for drivers to not be paying attention to the road are children or other people in the car. Children fighting in the backseat or yelling for a toy they dropped on the floor. There are many different scenarios of how children or other people in the car cause a car accident.
3. Getting Ready/Putting on Makeup
Some people falsely believe they can “save time” by getting ready for the day while also driving. This is a huge mistake that puts everyone on the road in danger. Nothing is more frightening than realizing the person driving next to you is more engaged in their appearance than the road in front of them. Adjust your schedule and get ready at home to save everyone from a car or truck accident.
With the convenience of drive-thru restaurants also comes the risk of drivers eating behind the wheel. Some people will park and eat or take the food home to their family, but there are many that chose to eat in the car while driving. Munching on some fries or chips is probably harmless but eating more complicated things like a salad should wait.
5. Stress or Daydreaming
If you have a lot on your mind, your mind may start to wander as you are driving. We all have numerous stresses in life from bills to work to kids and so on. It may be hard, but if you can work on shutting down your thoughts and focus solely on the road could save you from an accident.
